Missing - mojo

BOSTIK LEAGUE SOUTH CENTRAL DIVISION
TUESDAY 16 OCTOBER 2018
CHIPSTEAD 5 (4) EGHAM TOWN 0 (0)

From conceding four in the second half at Greenwich Borough on Saturday to conceding four in the first half at Chipstead tonight; bafflement arises among the spectating faithful. This time last week there were plaudits for the superb performance against Whyteleafe in the Velocity Trophy, fighting back from a goal down to win 2-1. On Saturday nobody could argue against Egham deserving their half-time lead. Then, in the next 90 minutes of play, an aggregate score of 0-8.
The spectating faithful were expecting some kind of fight back after being unceremoniously dumped out of the FA Trophy. It looked good initially, Brandon McCarthy making inroads down the right wing and pulling a pass back for Sean McCormack, who forced keeper Oliver Pain into a sprawling save. McCarthy put one over the bar after some good interpassing movement in the 9th minute. Two minutes later the home side went ahead, Daniel Moody, from the left corner of the box, hammered in a shot that left Conor Hudnott well beaten. Egham might have levelled just before going further behind but skewed shots by Kezie Ibe and McCarthy, both in the same attack, failed to find their mark. 0-2 came when Dean Hamlin shot, Hudnott parried and Ezekiel Bademosi pounced on the rebound. Given acres of space down the right wing, Matthew Warren created the next, the half hour point being marked by his low cross for Bademosi to make 0-3. Sam Bell ran on to a hopeful long pass and found space between Enock Soganile and Hudnott; 0-4 and time for a reviving cuppa.
Off went Michael Kalu, Lewis Hobbs and Josh Andrew and on came Rhys Rabess, Danny Julienne and Georges Ehui as the team came out early for a group therapy session in the centre circle. In that the Sarnies conceded only once in the second half, a free header by Bell on 73 minutes, it may be tempting to see that as a relative success. That would miss the wayward shooting of Rabess and McCormack beforehand; one of those going in might have triggered something akin to a recovery.
Some facts, stats fans: minus fifteen after seven games is not the basis for a push up the table. This was a game in hand wasted. Had we taken our chances on Saturday we would have beaten Greenwich. Had we not made errors tonight at least the defeat might not have been so horrible. To catch 16th placed Bedfont Sports we will have to win the game in hand we have over them and turn around eight goals. Our next opponents are Tooting & Mitcham United, who are in 15th place, two goals better than Bedfont. They have lost five of their last six. Next Tuesday we go to unbeaten (in the league) Bracknell Town, who have let in only 3 goals and occupy third place. Wherever our mojo has gone, someone had better find it p.d.q.
