In the end it was not so bad. In a game not that much different from the last time these two clubs met, in the semi-finals of the 2013-2014 competition, in that Woking again proved their superiority (the first match was won 7-1 at Kingfield) but Egham Town, 63 places below their visitors in the non-league pyramid, did enough for the result not to necessitate hand-wringing or soul-searching. Indeed, given that Dickson Gill had to patch together a squad with several players cup-tied, there was a lot to enjoy, particularly in the first half. Midfielders Adam Wadson and Josh Owen were borrowed for the match from Beckenham Town, and winger Kieran Scantlebury (Chessington & Hook United) joined new signing Joseph Adoo Peters (Chertsey Town) in a battle against a strong Woking side.
Egham started well, pushing Woking back, but The Cards had the first chance, Jack Skinner failing to convert a cross from Duane Ofori-Acheampong. A foul on Ofori-Acheampong in the box resulted in a penalty that Paul Hodges converted, but the second spot kick award was nothing like as clear cut, Hodges going to ground very easily, gulling the referee into another dose of pointing to the spot. Ofori-Acheampong scored for a two goal lead. Wadmore had the ball in the net as the half neared completion but was ruled offside.
The second period belonged to Nick Wheeler, who netted not long after Perry Coles had just failed to reach a Wadmore cross. Wheeler found room to fire in an angled shot past Egham keeper Jack Wingate. Sarnies’ skipper Luke King took a knock and was being treated when Woking scored number four, taking advantage of some unnecessarily intricate play in the home defence and giving Wheeler a gift he could not refuse. King had to go off, replaced by Connor Channon. On the hour Woking made it five, Jack Skinner and Hodges linking some neat passes together before the former crossed and Wheeler netted.
The rest of the game was largely sterile, leaving Woking to take on either AFC Wimbledon or Banstead Athletic in the quarter-finals.
Egham Town would like to extend their thanks to the players who came into the squad for tonight, and their clubs, allowing the Sarnies to complete the fixture. We wish all concerned the very best for the rest of the season.
Egham travel to Tooting & Mitcham United on Saturday and face Bracknell Town at home next Tuesday.
