Sarnies drop at least one point

After the humiliation of the defeat at Hayes & Yeading United the players of Egham Town fell to a completely unnecessary loss at home to a Moneyfields side with slim hopes of clambering into a play-off place. The consecutive successes against AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Hayes & Yeading United seem a long way away. From the off the visitors dominated possession, and were helped with their cause when home skipper Ashley Lodge went off with not a quarter of an hour played, having taken the ball in the face. Josh Andrew was his replacement, and he made his mark with a perfect corner for Michael Kalu to head home from ten yards. The goal came as some surprise to the Sarnies gathered at the clubhouse end, the ball having spent most of the time down the other end. Egham were putting some decent moves together but did not threaten Steve Mowthorpe’s goal anything like enough for comfort. As sure as eggs is eggs, with a minute before the break, Moneyfield were gifted the equaliser, ramshackle defending allowing Joseph Briggs to poke the ball home.
Egham were given a major boost just before the hour when referee Steven Scott sent off Moneys’ defender Daniel Woodward for a second caution. The trouble was that Egham failed utterly to exert any real pressure on the Hampshire visitors, a half chance for Stephan Hamilton-Forbes preceding an excellent save by Egham’s Matt Nolan, turning over a vicious drive by Marley Ridge, off a rebound from the same player’s first attempt. Ryan Debattista had worked hard if fruitlessly up front and gave way to top scorer Brendan Matthew, who did not look like adding to his tally. It seemed that a tatty draw was on the cards, but then, with five minutes left on the clock, Alex Nolan gave the ball away at left back and Lewis Fennemore executed an instant and perfectly judged lob over the other Nolan to give Moneys a league double and a rise to 10th. Even then the draw was feasible as Andrew barrelled his way through two tackles and laid on a pass for Rhys Paul, unmarked and six yards out and falling as he ballooned a more than decent chance into the Jungle End. There was even a chance in injury time, Andrew again the instigator with a fine run and pass to Matthew, whose shot was deflected for a corner.
Egham have a hectic end to this hotch-potch of a season. They have consecutive home games on Saturday 21st, against Fleet Town (with Egham seeking a long overdue win against The Blues), then on Tuesday 24th against Arlesey Town (whose relegation was confirmed tonight) and on 26th against Beaconsfield Town, who are second. They then have away games at, play-off hopefuls Chalfont St Peter (28th) and, on 1st May, end the season with a trip to Aylesbury, whose 2-0 win at Arlesey sealed the host’s fate.
