Superb second half showing but no reward

SURREY COUNTY FA SENIOR CUP ROUND THREE
WEDNESDAY 9 JANUARY 2013
METROPOLITAN POLICE 3 (2) EGHAM TOWN 0 (0)
Three nil. Sounds like a fairly heavy beating, doesn’t it? In the first half it was shaping up to be just that as Egham, fresh from letting in four in the second half at Croydon, played at Imber Court against a Met Police side comfortably mid-table a division and a half above the Sarnies. Under the less than welcome gaze of Messrs Hamsher and Noad (for the first half) Egham were a goal adrift after 8 minutes. A couple of hacks clear by Paul Borg failed to ease the early pressure and after Allan Tait’s shot eluded Borg’s grasp Steve Noakes scored off the rebound. Chances came pretty quickly for the home side with David Knight seeing a goal ruled out for offside, Craig Hughes’ deflected shot cleared and Harry Boyle forcing Borg into a superb save. Unfortunately a corner was far too easily turned in by Noakes from close range and after 35 minutes the Police had taken another step towards a home tie against Leatherhead or Lingfield in the next round. The second goal had followed hard on the heels of Egham’s most cohesive spell of the half, and was followed by Jamie Read, who use to play for the boys in blue, cracking in a shot to test keeper Jamie Butler.
How different was Egham’s second half performance! Whatever was said in the changing room did the trick as the team played at a greater pace and with a noticeable improvement in movement on and off the ball. These assets were allied with a greater determination to close down the favourites, but the Police hit the Town bar with a cross shot five minutes in. A loud and justified call for a penalty seven minutes in did not persuade referee Michael Webb. Patrick Craig shot, Butler dropped it and Jacob Lambe had a shot blocked, as he did on 73 minutes after collecting Read’s long pass and unleashing a drive that Butler did well to keep out. Egham were doing a decent job of kettling the Police in their own half and Read had a presentable chance to pull a goal back but on the break a cross shot was flicked in off the underside of the bar by Knight, with 79 gone. A third goal was cruel on Egham, who refused to be deflated and carried on looking for some reward for their hard work. Lambe had perhaps his best game in an Egham shirt with his pace and direct running keeping the home defence on their toes and he created a decent chance for Tommy Hedges late on. A last minute half chance for Read fizzled out but overall the team can be pleased that they put on a good showing in a difficult match as preparation for the visit on Saturday of Guernsey.
EGHAM TOWN: Paul Borg, Louis Chandler-Joseph, Joel Jacob, Jim Ward, Alex Rodrigues, Luke Muldowney (capt..), Tommy Hedges, Patrick Craig, Jacob Lambe, Jamie Read, Enrico Rossoni. Subs: Arran Taylor-Ives (Rodrigues, 73), Luke Craig (Rossoni, 69), Steve Coultas (P Craig, 76).
