EGHAM TOWN 4 (0) WEMBLEY 0 (0)
Egham Town scorers: Jacob Lambe (15), Brendan Matthew (70), Reis Stanislaus (89), Steve Coultas (90)
Tonight Egham Town managed an easy, almost serene, passage into the League Cup semi-finals against a side they have already beaten twice in the league, and now face Epsom & Ewell for a place in the final. They last reached this stage in season 2007-8, losing 1-2 at home to the now extinct (at least at senior level) Bedfont Green.
Lee Pasmore picked a starting XI with more than half an eye on a hectic Easter weekend that sees his charges face Ash United away on Thursday, Croydon at home on Saturday and a trip to Dorking for an 11.30 start at Dorking. Top scorer Jamie Read was on the bench, and stayed there, Tom Hedges was not in the squad and Reis Stanislaus and Steve Coultas came on to score goals in the dying minutes. Alex Rodrigues was also an unused sub, his place taken by the returning Junior Wright and in midfield Patrick Craig joined cousin Luke Craig. Jacob Lambe and Brendan Matthew were the chosen front pair, and both played well and got the goals their displays deserved. Lambe was first off the mark, and owes it all to Louis Chandler-Joseph’s storming right wing run and perfect cross that was met on the full for the young striker’s first goal at home. Wembley were enjoying a greater amount of possession but did not do enough with it. The best chance they had in the first half was a drive by Issah Abubakar that hit Wright on the Egham line.
The second half was pretty stale, with the home side comfortable and then grateful for a howler in defence that created the assist for the second goal. Kemo Maphela had caused problems with a shot that was scrambled clear just before Joel Jacobs whipped in a corner, Chris Kursten headed the ball back into the danger area and Matthew displayed admirable sangfroid in a crowded box, trapping it before smashing it past keeper Freddie Scannell. It could have attained more importance had Wayne Walters not missed a sitter with a back stick header off a corner, but then the subs Pasmore had made sealed the game. Coultas had replaced Luke Muldowney, Jim Ward came on for Arran Taylor-Ives and Stanislaus was on for Matthew. Two exquisite passes by Ward did the damage, the first finding Stanislaus in the inside right channel, the striker advancing to the edge of the box before hammering a shot past Scannell, and then a minute later Ward found Coultas who stretched to convert a great pass into the fourth goal.
