Reds out of Red Insure Cup

RED INSURE CUP SECOND ROUND
TUESDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2013
GODALMING TOWN 3 (1) EGHAM TOWN 0 (0)

Egham crashed out of the League Cup on Tuesday night at Weycourt, home of the Godalming Town side with whom Egham drew 1-1 in pre-season. The rash of injuries recently hitting the side is taking its toll: Patrick Craig, whose dynamic midfield performances were a feature of early success, is likely to be out for a while; Arran Taylor-Ives, recovering from a groin injury, went to play for Cove to get some match practice and picked up a foot injury; Mo Harkin has a thigh strain, Jamie Houghton has a cracked rib.
Lee Passmore set out with a three man front line, Jamie Read and Ryan O’Toole joined by former Burnham man Adam Bernard. It was an interesting attempt to liven up the Sarnies’ attack, and was given the sternest of tests when at the other end the park Jack Mazzone was granted time and space on the edge of the box to curl an unstoppable, curling shot beyond Gary Ross in the Egham goal. Ten minutes had gone by. Josh Andrew had had a shot saved just prior to the goal, and shortly after it a Joe Chandiram corner kick needed heading off the line. A couple of shots from Andy Crossley and Chandiram were easily saved.
The second half saw Read replaced by Brendan Matthew, and ten minutes in it was only a superb save by Zabi Oualah in the Godalming goal that denied Matthew an equaliser, the forward running in on the blind side to head a cross by O’Toole. Egham were, as ever, making some nice passing moves, but even with the extra attacker failed to make much of an impact. Only O’Toole and Matthew had shots, one each, on target. Kemo Maphela, who was with the side last season, came back from injury and replaced Crossley. Matthew snatched at a decent chance and Chris Ellis blasted a long shot just wide, but once Jon Palmer pounced on the rebound after Ross had spilled a shot by Mazzone, with three minutes left, the game was up. There was another good save by Oualah from Andrew’s angled drive, but a header by Calum Nimmo from a corner found the target in the 90th minute and that was that.
Back, apart from whatever the Surrey Senior Cup throws Egham’s way, to pressing Calor League concerns now for Passmore and his charges. The flowing football that was evident in the four-wins-on-the-bounce period from August into September can be seen still in patches, and it is Patrick “Patch” Craig whose loss seems most keenly felt. Aylesbury United visit on Saturday. They are in 13th place, Egham now in 16th after midweek results.
EGHAM TOWN: Gary Ross, Josh Andrew, Jake Galbraith, Kyle Anthony, Chris Ellis, Luke Muldowney (capt..), Joe Chandiram, Andy Crossley, Adam Bernard, Ryan O’Toole, Jamie Read. Subs: Jim Ward, Brendan Matthew (Read, HT), Kemo Maphela.
