Egham come through tough League Cup test

EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE
RED INSURE CUP SECOND ROUND
WEDNESDAY 19 NOVEMBER 2014
GODALMING TOWN 1 (0) EGHAM TOWN 2 (1)

Simeone (51) : Dwayne Antonio (2) Dan Read (50)

Egham Town earnt a place in the third round of the Red Insure Cup after a determined performance at Godalming Town. At this stage in the same competition last season the two sides met, with Godalming prevailing 3-0, and earlier this season a Jack Mazzone goal saw the Gs leave the Runnymede Stadium with three points. Egham were missing top marksman Reis Stanislaus, who was working (but named as a sub, just in case he could make it), and had several injury concerns which meant another reshuffle of the pack. Ricky Farnden made a welcome return, albeit in an unfamiliar No.10 role, and Wayne Jackson got a rare start. It was as well he did, as it was his vision and accuracy of passing that found Dwayne Antonio, 25 yards further forward, in enough space for the striker to beat one challenge and deftly slide the ball past home keeper Richard Ossai. Going a goal up after only two minutes gave Egham something to defend, which they had to do without the goalscorers after Antonio was injured. Former Godalming man Dan Read came on in his stead. The home side had little to offer up front until the end of the first period when Will Hutton had a shot deflected out for a corner, not sufficiently cleared. Antonio Simeone drilled in a low shot and Jamie Norris, another former G, saved well with his feet.
The second half was just five minutes gone when stand-in right back Danny Williamson had room down the wing to go on a run, which he finished with a perfect cross for Read. The Egham forward controlled the ball, easily sidestepped centre back Ashleigh Lloyd and found the bottom right corner of the net. Immediately Godalming replied, through Simeone’s fierce shot from outside the area. Thereafter the hosts laid siege to the Sarnies’ goal and Norris had to be at his best to save from Graham Purdy, twice, before the forward almost cut him in half with a late, high and unnecessary challenge that was apparently only worthy of a yellow card. Compare and contrast with the punishment meted out to Egham’s stalwart left back Jake Galbraith, given a red card for allegedly expressing dissent in an unauthorised fashion after being studded in another late challenge. Ryan Lake replaced Jackson to shore up the rearguard, with Farnden dropping back to a more familiar position and twice rescuing awkward situations with timely interceptions. With two minutes left Godalming thought they had scored, but the flag was up and after a last minute Mazzone effort was clattered out of the Egham box so, for the home side, was the game. Ossai came up for a corner as the seconds ticked away but once the ball was airborne the final whistle was blown.
Egham do not yet know the identity of their next opponents as the draw has not been made but there are some big names and some frightening journeys still in the hat.
On Saturday Egham Town entertain Hanwell Town for the first time. Hanwell beat Holmesdale (Southern Counties East League) 7-2 midweek in the London Senior Cup and sit in second place in the Evo-Stik Southern One Central table.
EGHAM TOWN: Jamie Norris, Danny Williamson, Jake Galbraith, Mo Harkin, Luke Muldowney, Lee Morley, Louis Chandler-Joseph, Joe Chandiram, Dwayne Antonio, Ricky Farnden, Wayne Jackson. Subs: Dan Read (Antonio, 23), Lake (Jackson (75), Reis Stanislaus.
