Egham Town were twice two goals adrift in this Red Insure Cup Third Round tie at Evo-Stik Southern League Premier side Burnham but recovered to go through after a penalty shoot-out. Egham came to this match after a heavy loss at Rugby Town and when Burnham's John Montgomery scored after only two minutes they looked all at sea. Half an hour later former Egham Town player Adam Bernard doubled the home side's lead but a superb move involving Joe Chandiram and Dwayne Antonio initially saw Reis Stanislaus have a shot parried by keeper Alec Lynch but Dan Read was alert and drilled home the rebound.
In the second half Ashley Quashie conceded a penalty that Gary Jones converted and it looked as if the Premier division strugglers would prevail. However Egham dug deep and to their immense credit refused to go under. Quashie ran down the left and clipped over the perfect cross for Antonio to score with a powerful header, ten minutes from time. That rocked the Buckinghamshire outfit Ryan Lake did exceptionally well to beat two defenders near the Burnham byline before crossing into the box where Chandiram ignored the presence of the centre backs to drive home the equaliser.
There is no extra time in this competition so it went straight to penalties. For Egham Ryan Lake and Mo Harkin scored, Reis Stanislaus had his saved, then Joe Chandiram, Wayne Jackson and Dan Read were the heroes, along with keeper Jamie Norris, who saved the third and sixth kicks. The draw for the next round has not been made.
