Egham progress in League Cup

EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE
RED INSURE CUP FIRST ROUND
TUESDAY 13 OCTOBER 2015
UXBRIDGE 0 (0) EGHAM TOWN 1 (1)
Egham Town scorer: Danny Bassett (24)

Egham Town made reasonably comfortable progress into the second round of the Red Insure Cup against an Uxbridge side who wanted revenge for being spanked 7-0 two weeks ago by the Sarnies. The chances of Egham notching up a similar score were reduced by the necessity of having to shuffle the squad as unavailability and injuries took their toll. The performance from the visitors failed to rise to the same heights as in the league win, but better to win big in the league and do just enough in the cup than the other way round. The changes saw Jerome Ecclestone rested, Tarome Hemmings covering for him, Reece Yorke unavailable so his brother Mason came in, skipper Kurtney Brooks returned and the front three of Bajram Pashaj, Chris Henry and Brendan Matthew were replaced by Dean McDonnell, Ollie Jones and Danny Bassett. It was Bassett who scored the only goal, earning his reward as he closed down Paul Mc Carthy in the Uxbridge goal. The keeper had the ball, kicked it towards Bassett, had it again, lost it and could only watch as the striker walked the ball into the net. Bassett was later denied a good opportunity for a shot by Danny Bailey’s well timed intervention, but that was about it for a generally quiet first half.
Central midfielder Jake Cass was replaced at half time by Pashaj and Egham continued their dominance of possession without making inroads until just after the hour when McCarthy had to be at his best to stop McDonnell converting a chance made by Bassett’s pass. Egham not converting their possession gave Uxbridge heart and they dominated the tail end of the match with Wayne Carter flashing a free kick across goal and causing some problems for the Sarnies’ defence. Egham held firm and teetotal Sarnie Jimmy Hughes won on the raffle the bottle of Portuguese rose that I shall enjoy drinking tomorrow!
EGHAM TOWN: Jamie Norris, Tarome Hemmings, Mitchell Gutteridge, Mason Yorke, Luke Neville, Kurtney Brooks (Captain), Callum Webb, Jake Cass, Danny Bassett, Dean McDonnell, Ollie Jones. Subs: Iven Kumanda, Bajram Pashaj, Chris Henry, Richard Worrell, Brendan Matthew.
