Egham out of Red Insure Cup

EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE
RED INSURE CUP SECOND ROUND
TUESDAY 1 DECEMBER 2015
EGHAM TOWN 1 (1) GODALMING TOWN 2 (2)
Ryan De Battista (23) Danny Bassett 2 (37, 59)

Former Egham Town’s former Staines Town forward Danny Bassett grabbed two goals on his return to the Runnymede Stadium to secure for his new club a home tie against Northwood in the third round of the Red Insure Cup. Bassett’s brace came after his replacement in the Sarnies’ squad, Ryan De Battista, had scored his first goal since joining from divisional rivals Beaconsfield SYCOB halfway through a strangely bloodless cup match for which Egham Town boss Gary Meakin made several changes to the side that had won against Aylesbury on Saturday.
The first twenty or so minutes of the game was played mainly in the visitors’ half with Egham trying to unpick the G’s defence but determined defending kept the front pairing of Battista and Tom Collins at bay. The breakthrough came as De Battista used his speed to break free and home in on keeper Danzelle Hamilton St Louis. The striker’s shot hit the foot of the left post but he was quick to react and drive the ball into the roof of the net. From the kick off Egham attacked and De Battista found Collins, who shot over the bar. De Battista was in again two minutes later and aimed his shot for the bottom left. The keeper pulled off a decent save that referee Michael Webb rewarded with a goal kick… Egham were now cutting the G’s defence to ribbons and Collins found room for a cross to De Battista who hit the ball on the volley and grazed the bar. Then the attacks stopped and Egham were sloppy in defence and Bassett took full advantage for a 37th minute equaliser. From the restart Egham ceded midfield possession and Stephen Laidler hit a rising shot that Egham keeper Jamie Norris did well to push away at full stretch. From the corner Tom Willment was allowed loads of room for a free header but made a mess of the chance.
Jake Cass replaced Tarome Hemmings in midfield five minutes into a second half that meandered along so listlessly either side of Ollie Jones going on a solo run and clipping a shot wide that there was almost no reaction anywhere when Bassett scored the winner after 59 minutes. Thereafter some sporadic movements upfield were comfortably repelled by Godalming and it was not until four minutes into injury time that Cass, off Ryan Phillips’ cross,
hit a powerful volley that cleared the bar.
EGHAM TOWN: Jamie Norris, Ryan Phillips, Reece Yorke, Mason Yorke, Tarome Hemmings, Callum Webb, Elliott Carey, Ryan De Battista, Tom Collins, Ollie Jones. Substitutes: Luke Neville, Jake Cass (Hemmings, 50), Iven Kumanda, Bajram Pashaj (Collins, 80), Brendan Matthew (Carey, 69).
