De Battista hits hat-trick

EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL
SATURDAY 12 DECEMBER 2015
GODALMING TOWN 1 (1) EGHAM TOWN 3 (3)
ASHLEY LLOYD (33) / RYAN DE BATTISTA 3 (3, 38, 45+1)

Ryan De Battista hit the most emphatic of first half hat-tricks as Egham Town maintained their push to stay in contention for the play-offs. The rangy young striker only made his debut on 24 October, in a Surrey Senior Cup tie at Corinthian Casuals. It was a match in which he struck the cross bar in a penalty shoot-out which the Sarnies lost but since then he created the situation from which Brendan Matthew scored the winner against Aylesbury, opened the scoring in a League Cup game at home to Godalming and grabbed the equaliser against Northwood. He came in just as Danny Bassett, who scored the two goals that won that League Cup tie, left for the G’s. The contrast was remarkable. After only three minutes Egham, who started off clearly intending to take the game to their hosts, created havoc in the Godalming defence, there was a horrible misunderstanding between centre back Tom Willment and keeper Richard Ossai, Matthew squared the ball and De Battista slammed the ball into an open net. Egham took that as a sign that the home side were there for the taking and had the defence chasing shadows. Shots were blocked and Ossai made a brilliant save at the foot of his right post from Callum Webb’s powerful effort. Egham then lost their momentum and allowed Godalming back into the game. Darren Wheeler’s free kick went just over after 24 minutes and it was no surprise that the Sarnies paid the price for switching off when they conceded the equaliser. There seemed to be no communication between Jamie Norris in the Egham goal and right back Hassan Soloman, who perhaps would not otherwise have conceded the corner kick from which Ashley Lloyd was given all the time and room he could ever want to thump his header into Norris’ net. Five minutes later De Battista restored the lead, haring down the right wing before selling Ossai a dummy and clipping a wonderful angled shot with the outside of his left boot into the far corner of the net. That seemed to draw the sting from Godalming. With the half very nearly finished a concerted move that involved Egham skipper Kurtney Brooks, Bajram Pashaj and Brendan Matthew ended with Pashaj seeing his cross slammed home by the marauding De Battista. Any expectation that the Sarnie faithful had of a bigger win were blown away in the swirling wind, the closest attempt coming on the hour as Pashaj crashed a curling shot against the bar off a pass by De Battista, who himself later crashed a shot into the side netting. Matthew was frustrated in his efforts to add to the tally, none more so than when a good run ended in what looked like indecision about the efficacy or otherwise of essaying a lob over Ossai before Chris Musgrove closed him down. Egham had two debutants in this starting XI. Ryan Parsons a signing from Hanwell Town, (with Slough Town, Wealdstone, Harrow Borough, Hemel Hempstead Town, Windsor FC/Windsor & Eton, Maidenhead United and Wycombe Wanderers also on his CV) gave a solid performance at left back and in midfield Wes Daley added a wealth of experience after playing for, in Wiki-order, Queens Park Rangers (for whom he made his first of nine first team appearances in March 2002, and who loaned him to Gravesend & Northfleet and Raith Rovers), Grays Athletic, AFC Wimbledon, Maidenhead United, Boreham Wood, Hendon, Bromley, Basingstoke, Hemel Hempstead Town, Hayes & Yeading and, this season, Leatherhead. Such experience can only help Egham Town move forward. Still in seventh place (P19 Pts 35) due to other results, Egham finish the year with a trio of difficult games that will certainly test them. On Tuesday they entertain Royston Town (5th, P 20 Pts 36), on the 19th go to St. Ives Town (3rd, 20/40) and end with a midweek trip on the 22nd to AFC Rushden & Diamonds (1st, 19/43).
EGHAM TOWN: Jamie Norris, Hassan Soloman, Ryan Parsons, Reece Yorke, Luke Neville, Kurtney Brooks (Captain), Callum Webb, Wes Daly, Brendan Matthew, Ryan De Battista, Bajram Pashaj. Subs: Ryan Phillips (Webb, 83), Chris Henry (De Battista, 89), Elliott Carey (Pashaj, 69), Jake Cass.
