CAMBERLEY TOWN 1 (0) EGHAM TOWN 0 (0)
A tired Egham Town lost a close tussle on on their least favourite grounds last night. Egham, without Enrico Rossoni and Jamie Houghton (away on holiday), have a poor record on the pronounced slope of Krooner Park, but until late on it looked as if they would leave with a point.
A first half of few chances and little excitement was seconds old when Louis Hibbert tested Egham keeper Paul Borg with a fierce drive, and three minutes later Michael Smith was denied by more good work from Borg. Camberley had some half chances and were good at keeping Egham at arms length. The best they managed was a shot wide from Tom Hedges as the half time break approached.
The second half was not a lot better for the handful of spectators. Lee Pasmore, in for Houghton, and Brendan Matthew, for Rossoni, were working hard in midfield but Hedges looked isolated at times. There was controversy after 54 minutes when Egham skipper Aarron Taylor-Ives played the ball back to Borg, who was summarily flattened by Martin Girling. Borg needed patching up while Girling, whose offence merited a red card, got away with a yellow. On the hour Camberley were shouting for a penalty, which did not come, but that shout looked more realistic than that a minute later, for an alleged foul by Ken During. However, even while not fully recovered from Girling's foul on him, Borg dived to his left to smother Smith's spot kick. That seemed to give Egham a lift, Hedges beating Paul Andrews before pulling the ball back for Matt Grave, who had screamed for the ball and then lifted it carelessly over the bar. Smith clipped a shot over the Egham bar and it seemed that a rare goalless draw for Egham (only four in all their time in the CCL) was on the cards but then Girling, who should not have been on the pitch, rose to head home a cross from the Camberley left. Manager John Hamsher switched Hedges and Matthew on the wings, which did at least give Hedges the chance to cut in from the left and fire the only shot on target Egham managed in the whole game.
Egham will be looking for an improved performance at Dorking on Saturday.
