With a full squad available Egham Town returned to winning ways for this excellent win, and first CCL double, over Horley Town. Egham had triumphed 2-1 at the New Defence with goals by Matt Grave and Aarron Taylor-Ives, and repeated the trick at the Runnymede Stadium.
Egham started on the front foot, making it clear that they were determined to come out of this league game with something, preferably a three point haul. In the first three minutes Ian Chatfield in the Horley goal had to deal with two shots from Jamie Houghton, and with nine minutes gone Grave hooked a volley back across goal, missing only narrowly. Enrico Rossoni came close to converting a Jake Galbraith cross, Houghton saw another effort held by Chatfield and Dale Marvell had a shot go wide and then saw a corner headed over by his skipper, Taylor-Ives. Keeping up the pressure Grave chested the ball down for Tom Hedges for another shot wide, and Horley's battered defence had to cope then with more attempts from Rossoni, Marvell and Rossoni again; the visitors must have wondered how they sat down at half time on level terms with their hosts.
Six minutes into the second half that state of affairs changed when Grave, 25 yards out, hammered in a whipped shot that left Chatfield grasping thin air. The problem was that straight from the kick off parity was restored with a cross shot from Gary Tomlinson finding the bottom right corner of Paul Borg's net. Horley had their best spell of pressure for the next ten minutes, but they only managed a shot by sub Mithun Nayee, which Lee Pasmore blocked. Egham regained control in midfield and continued to stretch the visiting defence. Taylor-Ives headed over another Marvell corner and Chatfield made a fine save from a Marvell free kick. Eventually, though, the Marvell – Taylor-Ives partnership worked as a well-flighted free kick from the former found the Egham captain a yard out and able to divert the ball in off his head and into the Horley net. Grave shot wide and was then substituted, by Brendan Matthew, before Rossoni shot wide and was also subbed, Louis Chandler-Joseph coming on. There was late controversy after Nathan Jupp came on and within seconds was involved in an altercation with Egham's left back Jake Galbraith. Jupp flattened the Egham man, who was accused of hitting his assailant in retaliation, but referee Mr. Hilary Hchgeniu chose only to book both men. It seemed to wind Horley up; midfielder Luke Ragetti got booked for a silly dispute over what ten yards between a defender and the corner flag looks like and after the match it took the counselling and friendly arm-round-the shoulders of successful Egham boss John Hamsher to calm down the ranting Nathan Jupp.
Egham face Croydon, whom they beat 3-2 at the Croydon Arena earlier this campaign, on Tuesday and have another home game on Saturday, aiming to avenge the 1-3 defeat Badshot Lea inflicted on them at Godalming Town's ground.
