EGHAM TOWN shook off the side effects of the weekend hike to Guernsey and back with a hard won and hard-working performance against Wembley, much in the news because of their lucrative tie-in with Budweiser in the FA Cup. The many and various stars were notable in their absence tonight; this was a thoroughly recognisable Wembley side with old stagers Ian Bates, Paul Shelton and Juno Mitchell and, of course, former Sarnie custodian Lee Pearce still turning out for the Londoners.
Egham set an attacking tempo from the start, with James Walters having a header cleared and James McShane clipping Pearce’s bar after three and four minutes. Wembley have pace up front and after a McShane corner led to Pearce denying Aarron Taylor-Ives’ far post header they broke through Bryan Marshe, whose cross was headed wide by Shelton. Egham were creating half chances with some lovely interwoven passing, and a slightly quicker reaction may have seen Charlie McCarthy on the scoresheet after a cross shot by Tom Hedges beat the visitors’ defence.
The pace did not let up in the second half. Egham replaced Walters with Jamie Read, whose more dynamic approach caused Wembley problems for the 35 minutes he was on. It was Read who laid on the only goal of the game after a superb passage of play that saw Tom hedges sweep a perfect pass out to the right for Matt Smith. His deep cross to the back post was met by Read, Pearce fumbled and McCarthy steered the ball home from close range. McCarthy’s appearance was curtailed when Shane Graham replaced him, but this was no criticism of his performance as this was his best since his return. There was always the fear, especially towards the end, that one goal may not be enough, so Louis Chandler-Joseph gave the away team something else to think about with his pace as he made a late appearance for the industrious Matt Smith.
The win lifts Egham back up the table to 3rd, on goal difference behind Guernsey, who won 3-0 at Cove. Bedfont Sports lost 1-2 at home to Molesey, who are top with maximum points from their first 4 games, Hartley Wintney beat Ash United 3-2 and Croydon lost 1-2 on the Raynes Park Vale slope.
