Narrow loss in the new kit

CALOR LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL
SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2013
KETTERING TOWN 1 (1) EGHAM TOWN 0 (0)

Egham Town’s new green-blue-green away kit made its debut in front of a 592 strong crowd at Latimer Park on Saturday but unfortunately the performance of the men wearing it was not quite as bright as the shirts. On a pitch that showed already the effects of having not just Kettering Town but also Burton Park Wanderers (United Counties League Division One) playing on it, and before a home support yearning for a return to the good old days (and a home to call their own) the task facing Lee Passmore’s men would have been hard anyway, but due to some traffic difficulties they arrived late and were not on the pitch until 15.06. It was not really surprising therefore that the home side took advantage of the Egham players still having in their legs the stiffness of being in a minibus for the best part of two hours. Egham keeper Gary Ross, whose own kit is now a sort of fuchsia, launched the ball towards the returning Jamie Read, who was outjumped by centre back Henry Eze and the ball fell for Louis Hamilton who, um, raced clear before facing Ross and finishing easily once he had bypassed the Egham custodian. Ten minutes had elapsed. Said custodian then took centre stage for a while, twice needing treatment before, in the 28th minute, fouling Will Mizumbri in the box. The striker’s run up to the spot kick was so clumsily executed that guessing which way he was going to kick it was clear even to me, and it was easy for Ross to save. Having got the stiffness out of their limbs Egham began to put some pressure on a decidedly average looking home team, but the few chances they created were wasted. First of these was an Andy Crossley corner that Ryan O’Toole, as he had done at Carshalton, headed into the keeper’s grasp. A clumsy foul on Louis Chandler-Joseph by Tommy Hull would later be the source of some controversy when, after dumping the same Egham man on the deck in the 51st minute, referee Scott Postin bottled it and let the Rupert Grint look alike stay on the pitch. O’Toole mishit a free kick, the ball trundling wide of the goal but with the keeper flatfooted the chance was there, if at least one team mate had been sufficiently alert, for a tap in at the left post.
Crossley, with a free kick, created the first chance of a second half in which the Poppies hardly featured as an attacking threat, Kyle Anthony forcing Charles Horton into a save with a decent header. Tommy Hedges might have done better than sky a shot over the bar after Read and O’Toole had linked well and Chandler-Joseph could have done with being three inches taller from another Crossley cross. O’Toole shot over as defenders closed him down halfway through the second period, but the heavy conditions drained the momentum out of the game until, once Ross had made a good save from Rob Foster, O’Toole, from a difficult angle, had a shot saved in the dying seconds of a game from which the visitors should have come away with at least a point.
EGHAM TOWN: Gary Ross, Josh Andrew, Jake Galbraith, Kyle Anthony, Jim Ward, Liam Muldowney, Louis Chandler-Joseph, Tommy Hedges, Jamie Read, Ryan O’Toole, Andy Crossley. Subs: Chris Ellis (Chandler-Joseph, 81), Jacob Lambe (Crossley, 79), Brendan Matthew (76).
