CALOR ONE CENTRAL SAT 8 MARCH 2014
AYLESBURY UNITED 0 EGHAM TOWN 0
Due to a series of events that yours truly could and should have managed in a more efficient manner I missed the first half of the first half of this match. “We’re 4-0 up and Reis has a hat-trick” said Jimmy Hughes. Somehow I doubted it. I was right. He said “Actually nothing has happened” and pretty much nothing, or at least not very much that was noteworthy, kept on happening for the rest of this Calor One Central tussle between the sides in 11th (The Ducks) and 10th (The Sarnies).
I was at Leighton Town’s Bell Close ground, current home of Aylesbury United, in time to see Josh Andrew force a corner from which Ryan Lake picked up a silly booking for punching the ball into the net. Andrew forced another corner and on the half hour seemed to be in at least two minds as he went one on one with home keeper Jack Sillitoe. At the other end the Ducks created little and what they did they wasted with wild shots.
The second period was much of a muchness, with the ball not running kindly for either front line and both teams preferring to lump the ball upfield, which was perhaps understandable on a hard and bobbly pitch. A momentary lack of concentration by Town custodian Jamie Norris almost let United in but Ryan Lake did his defensive job well. Unfortunately that also meant he picked up an injury that saw a depleted match squad further diminished. Calvin Thomas later also limped off, which may be a worry with a return visit to Royston Town on Tuesday. Aylesbury United created the most attacking move of the game with two minutes of normal time remaining as a quick break down their right saw a cross find Stacey Field whose shot from point blank range forced a magnificent leaping save from Norris. It was not long before United fashioned a similar move but without the same goal threat. So, as with the trip to Bell Close against the landlords the game finished goalless. At the end a point each was a fair reward for both sides.
