Kettering win comfortably to stay top

Kettering Town: Andy Gooding (4), Dubi Ogbonna (8), Josh Moreman (47)

Egham Town were unlucky to face hot title favourites Kettering Town for their first home game in the new season, but did themselves no favours in giving away two goals in the opening eight minutes.
Charlie Muldowney became the third No. 10 in three games, the others being Dan Read (now on holiday in Las Vegas) and Duane Antonio, scorer of Egham’s first goal against Aylesbury United but on the bench for this game. Within four minutes Muldowney was deemed to have fouled Josh Moreman in the box, despite it looking more like a dive. The Poppies’ Andy Gooding took the penalty, which Sarnies’ keeper Garry Aulsberry saved but Gooding reacted quickly to drill home the rebound. Four minutes from the opener a run and shot by Moreman resulted in a scramble in the Egham box. Centre forward Dubi Ogbonna took control of the situation and found the net. Another four minutes thereafter Ogbonna controlled the ball and shot on the volley but Aulsberry saved comfortably. Egham were embattled and thankful that their keeper saved from Moreman and Ogbonna, and were only able to muster a couple of off target long range shots from Scott Weight and Joe Chandiram. Finally the Poppies’ keeper Joe McAlindon was tested, saving superbly from when Reis Stanislaus got his head to a clever pass from Calvin Thomas. As the half closed out Bret Solkham would have extended Kettering’s lead but for a superb double save by Aulsberry.
Whatever was said in the home dressing room about getting back into the game was nullified two minutes after the restart when Moreman, in the inside right channel, hammered in a cross shot into the far corner of the net. Skipper Luke Muldowney had been replaced by Ricky Farnden in the dressing room, the idea being to stiffen the midfield and play 3-5-2. That goal killed the game as a contest. There was a five minute hold-up when McAlindon went down after being challenged by Stanislaus, went off, looked as if he’d be subbed by sub custodian Nick Brennion, and then recovered enough to carry on. Stanislaus tested McAlindon in the 64th minute with an excellently struck free kick and Ryan Lake was unlucky not to get a touch on the rebound but throughout the game the visitors had a tight control on proceedings. They were quicker in the tackle and did more with the ball than Egham, just as they had done when they visited in the tail end of last season and won by the same score. The Sarnies, in 16th place with three points from three games, next play on Monday at Beaconsfield SYCOB, and will be praying that the sight of Reis Stanislaus receiving treatment from physio Heather Stevenson after the final whistle does not mean an enforced absence for the striker. On Saturday Egham go to Potters Bar Town and on Bank Holiday Monday are at home to Godalming Town.
