COMBINED COUNTIES PREMIER NORTH

EGHAM TOWN 0 (0)
WOKINGHAM TOWN 1 (1)
Joao Jardim (37)
Egham Town now have a full set of results after the first three games of the season, following an opening day draw with British Airways and Tuesday’s beating of Broadfields United with this lacklustre showing against a Wokingham Town side that had lost their opening two matches.
Harlem Hale, scorer of a brace on Tuesday, was unavailable, so Montel Brown and Reece Mitchell formed the front duo. It took a while for the game to get going properly, but Mitchell had the first shot in anger after some good play down the left gave him room for a shot that skewed wide. Mitchell’s next chance, in the 29th minute, was created by left back Kyle Watson’s run, the striker bringing a decent block from Max West. The only goal of the game, Joao Jardim’s well struck, rising drive from distance after outrunning Watson, was of a quality that this game did not deserve. In injury time Egham skipper Reece Yorke’s header from Sam Shaw’s corner forced West to scramble across the goal to claw the ball to safety.
The second half was not a great spectacle. “The Sumas” took almost every opportunity to break up the game. They had a lead and were determined to hold onto it. Tyler Tobin was barely troubled in the home goal after pulling off a good save from Mikey O’Connor’s header in the 53rd minute. Egham had looked lightweight up front, but had a bit more sparkle when Danny Campion replaced Brown, and created room for a shot that was deflected narrowly over. From the corner there was a scramble, the ball hit the underside of the bar and someone should have been on hand to tap it in. From then on, the home bench became more irritated by Wokingham’s time wasting, but they had probably not expected to score, let alone be leading and on course for their first three point haul. Egham now had the goalscoring experience of Mitchell, Campion and Ed Clements on the park but failed to create hardly
any clear cut chances. Campion became exasperated at the slowness of the visitors in retrieving the ball after Clements had a shot deflected, and, in getting the ball himself and putting it on the deck for West to kick, seemingly upset referee Stephen Saunders, who booked him. As the Egham bench fretted, manager Jordan Berry tried the age-old tactic of pushing the big centre-half (Yorke) up front for the final few minutes. It created room for Campion, whose shot was saved by West. Barely had the final whistle gone when Campion got into an argument with West and was dismissed.
This was sub-standard. The Sarnies have played three, all at home, and have already dropped five points – all of the three were winnable. Next up is a trip to Burnham on Saturday, then home games against Bedfont Sports on Tuesday 27 August (moved from Bank Holiday Monday) and, on 31 August, Berks County.
