Egham Town dropped out of the Bostik League South Central Division with barely a whimper, an early goal only a cadaveric spasm before the visitors took, and never looked like losing, control. The home side began well, and earnt reward for their enterprise with Anthony Thomas’ deft conversion of Greg White’s through ball in a one-on-one with Chipstead keeper Taye Ashby-Hammond. Then it went pretty much as far too much of this dismal, ill-managed flop of a season. After 32 minutes a Chipstead free kick took a horrible deflection, the ball rolling past the flat-footed Ryan Sandford. Samuel Clayton took the plaudits. Just before the break Ezekiel Bademosi converted a low cross from the right. A passage of crisp passing preceded Jacob Sewell’s 63rd minute goal and Callum Hope’s free header rammed home the point that Egham, in almost all guises, have just not been good enough. There have been highlights: knocking Staines Town out of the FA Cup before it became clear that their neighbours were to have an even more disastrous campaign; drawing with runaway Champions Hayes & Yeading United; beating a Bracknell Town side that had won 7-1 in the first match. Chairman Pat Bennett expressed a desire to bounce back again, but there is as yet no decision on who will manage the team. With Step 5 Champions guaranteed elevation, they could potentially be joined in promotion by runners-up via either play-offs with Step 4 clubs or through PPG (point s per game). This means that, for one season only, there are two slots up for grabs which must be all the incentive the Sarnies need to get geared up for a quick return to Step 4.
