Egham Town had a day to remember as they ended their home matches in the 2024-25 CCL Premier North with a win in front of a massive crowd, and the presentation of the CCLPN trophy.
In that order, here goes. North Greenford United gave the Champions an honour guard before the match, then, as they still had a very faint chance of making the play-offs, tried to make things difficult for the Sarnies. Jordan Berry had to mix things up as Harlem Hale was carrying a knock, which gave Excellence Muhemba a start. Unexpectedly, and nerve-settlingly, early Egham were gifted the first goal. Jordan Brown picked up a loose pass, and as he closed on goal the keeper, Ryan Lehane, made a complete hash of whatever he was trying to do, which made the scoring of his 11th goal a formality. The London side have in their side a very talented forward called Harvey Killeen, who was linking with Remel Larwood on the right wing, and Charlie Mitchell in midfield to find gaps in the Egham defence. That gave Tyler Tobin, the Sarnies’ keeper, opportunity to show his agility. What wasn’t planned, or wanted, was an equaliser. Muhemba had tried to deliver a cross from the right, but NGU broke, Killeen played the ball through for Mitchell and he poked the ball in, despite appearing to be offside.
In the 57th minute, Lehane made amends for his earlier blunder, standing firm as Brown ran onto skipper Reece Yorke’s superb long pass. As had happened in quite a few matches this season, Egham’s opposition seemed to run out of ideas and “oomph” in the second period. In the 71st minute Billy Adcock’s free kick was headed out, Reece Mitchell connected beautifully on the volley and Lehane was forced to make a fine save.
The winner, nine minutes from time, showed why shutting down space is crucial. Brown denied Rahim Jude-Boyd room to clear, and the ball landed nicely for Connor Cullen, who had replaced Muhemba. He took the ball to the byline, made everyone think he was going to pull it back for a team mate, and then calmly slipped his shot past Lehane and into the far side of the net. Like Brown, that was his 11th of the season, and it made him the last man to score on grass at the Runnymede Stadium. With that goal Egham Town reached 113 goals in the league, matching their highest ever, achieved while winning the Combined Counties Premier title in 2012-13. In fact, this season beats the old record; the older title was won over 42 games and there is still one left of the 38 in this campaign. The record could have been broken with the last ever touch by an Egham player on Runnymede Stadium’s grass pitch, but Ben Peden’s header, from a corner, was just off target. He will have to stay on 13 goals for now, a personal triumph and not bad for a defender. The final whistle was blown, and the majority of the 401 strong crowd cheered as “Jordan Berry’s Sarnie Army” shared their joy with the Sarnie support.
The club had organised a mass printing of commemorative t-shirts for sale in exchange for a donation to the White Lodge centre in Chertsey. It certainly looked like a good decision, as a hefty proportion of the crowd were wearing them even before kick-off.
The presentation of the Combined Counties League Premier North Championship trophy was conducted by the Deputy Mayor of Runnymede, Councillor Margaret Harnden. There was a congratulatory speech by the Combined Counties League President, Mr D Havenhand, with the local MP, Mr Ben Spencer, in attendance.
Egham Town still have one game to play, and one two jobs to do. The first is to win, which will cover the second, which is to win at Bedfont Sports and therefore record at least one win against all the sides in the division, and set that goalscoring record.
It seems likely that Isthmian League South Central will be next season’s destination, perhaps replacing Ashford Town (Mx.).
