League double number seven and a bounce back to third place were the rewards for Egham Town in this Easter Monday match at Scours Lane. Egham had to rejig again after their skipper Reece Yorke picked up a knock against Tadley Calleva, Adam Humphries taking the armband and a central defensive role.
The bumpy pitch almost created the opening goal in the 9th minute, Egham keeper Michael Edegbe having to react smartly as Ezio Touray’s downward header span off the surface at a crazy angle. The Sarnies leading scorer, Brendan Matthew, was presented with a great chance to add to his tally as Trevan Robinson’s run down the right was followed with a good cross, but Matthew drove his shot against keeper Charlie York. The first half saw little in the way of chances thereafter, despite Egham having the majority of the possession.
The second half began with Luke Maguire taking the place of Ezekiel Williams. He had an entertaining afternoon. Six minutes in a long ball down the middle caught out the City keeper, who tried and failed to head clear, the ball sailing over his head. Matthew ran in, his shot was blocked, and, with York still out of position, Maguire lobbed the ball over the bar. No sooner had the cries of disappointment died in the throats of the Egham support than Matthew took the ball down the left, drilled in a low cross and Maguire scored from close range. The lead was doubled in thrilling style as Dan Brown refused to give up in a tussle for the ball on the right wing and, having gained control, played in a perfect pass for Matthew, 30 yards from goal. The striker advanced on the home keeper and confidently rolled his shot home. Leyton Basterfield’s curling attempt from the edge of the Egham box went narrowly wide, and the points were secured five minutes from time as Maguire, whose appearances have been sporadic this season, bagged his first double since the 3-0 win at Tadley Calleva in August with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area. Apart from Tyler Cruz’s needless and reckless challenge on Edegbe in the last minute that was about it.
The Sarnies’ campaign ends with a trip to Ascot United on Saturday. Jordan Berry’s men cannot finish lower than 4th. North Greenford United and Ascot United have 58 points each and one game left. Egham have 66 points, Abbey Rangers 65, but with two games to play, at Spelthorne Sports and St Panteleimon. Egham currently have a goal difference of 28, to Abbey Rangers’ 25. Coming third would be a great finish for either club.
