League Cup exit, local derby loss and farewell to Danny

COMBINED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER CHALLENGE CUP THIRD ROUND
TUESDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2022
EGHAM TOWN 1 (1)
LUKE BROPHY (44)
REDHILL 2 (2)

Egham Town entertained the holders of the Premier Challenge Cup in this third round tie but came up short in a match that saw the final appearance of leading scorer Danny Campion. Before that bombshell fell the Sarnies put on a performance that was not quite strong enough to see off a Redhill side that had seen their manager move to South Park and the installation of a former Staines Town boss in his stead. The League bulletin, released on Tuesday morning, listed ten players signed since that change. That can, as one their committee said, can be misleading; the yellow-shirted visitors did not look like a bunch of strangers. In fact they took the lead just 12 minutes in, a header from a corner kick doing the damage. Their advantage was doubled when a forward nipped in on young keeper Finn Rushton’s dithering and did what he had to do. A minute from the break Campion slipped a neat pass to the overlapping Luke Brophy, who walloped the ball into the far corner of the net registering his first goal for the club.
Reece Yorke, on at half time for Baback Dehghani, hooked a pass to Campion just before the hour, and as Jack Wadmore moved in to clear he seemed to handle the ball. Referee Alexander McKey ignored it. Moments later Yorke’s low shot was belted off the line. Egham kept the pressure on, Brophy spun in a corner and Trevan Robinson rose for a header that drew a stunning save from The Lobsters’ Jack Hinchin. Jack Knight pulled an equally spectacular block from Rushton in the 70th minute. Three minutes later Campion’s time as an Egham Town player came to an end as he was subbed by Radu Stefanoiaca. The sub was making his first appearance for several months following a shoulder injury. The game dribbled to its conclusion.
The following day Campion posted:
Proper gutted to be saying this but I've parted ways with @EghamTown. Not a bad word to say about that club, I'd like to thank them and the Bennett family for everything they've done.
Currently looking for a club for the season step 4/5. scored 21 goals so far. RTs appreciated.
It didn’t take long for Isthmian South Central side Binfield to sign him. Thanks, Dan, for the memories, including some great goals, especially against Colliers Wood United and the brace against Berks County. Your fans will miss you.

HANWORTH VILLA 3 (0) EGHAM TOWN 0 (0)

Egham Town made the short trip to Rectory Meadows to visit a Hanworth Villa side sitting a huge 23 points clear of second-placed North Greenford United. The Villains came to this local derby unbeaten in the League, and with only two points dropped at home. That was a 3-3 draw with Edgware Town in mid-August. This ultimately comfortable victory was their 12th home League win on the spin. For Egham, in fourth, and who suffered a narrow 0-1 home loss in the first fixture, it was a test to see if they could put a “1” in their “L” column, even after the loss of their 15-goal leading scorer. Michael Edegbe was back between the posts after injury and Steve Brown kept his place (after signing from Chesham United) in defence having made his debut against Redhill.
Trevan Robinson made the first impression, his pace unnerving the home defence for the first half of the first half, a period in which Jordan Berry’s men enjoyed the more meaningful possession. The home management felt moved to make a change to their line-up to counter the threat of the Sarnies’ right wingman, especially facing Jordan Williams, which had some effect. Villa might have taken the lead in the 25th minute when Jordan Ellis ran onto a kindly bounce and hit the ball on the half volley, but Edegbe pulled off a smart save. Egham shaded the first half, and would have been looking forward to a similarly close second, but it went wrong after only five minutes of the restart. A high ball left Samad Kazi struggling to gain control, Ellis closed him down, Yorke tackled him and referee Andy Mizra deemed the challenge worthy of a penalty and a caution for the Egham skipper. Sam Merson did the expected from the spot. There was a brief melee after a foul on Brendan Matthew, Egham’s Sandro Costa and Villain Louis Taylor seeing yellow. In the 65th minute Villa went further ahead. Shadrac Malembe beat Ryan Philllips to the ball, got his cross in and Jerome Federico fired his shot into the top right corner. Changes were made but the only glimmer of hope, Adam Humphries finding Matthew with a through ball, was quickly extinguished by a raised flag. Meshach Williams scored with ease four minutes from time to prevent North Greenford United (4-0 winners at Edgware Town) impinging on that massive points lead. Villa have nine games left and are 27 points ahead of Egham. The Sarnies, who host Southall (winners on penalties against Stansfeld in the FA Vase 5th round) on Saturday, have 11 more games to play.
In other news, Danny Campion scored the equaliser for Binfield at home to Bedfont Sports. Binfield then let in two late goals and lost 1-3. In other, other news Buckland Athletic, at some remove from friendly local officials as they travelled to Newport Pagnell Town, went out 3-4 on penalties in the Vase.
