Egham Town earnt a home tie against Frimley Green in the Surrey Senior Cup with this confident and well deserved win against a decent Sheerwater side at Woking’s Laithwaite Stadium. Tony Choules’ men bounced back superbly after two poor showings, aided by a magnificent hat-trick from leading scorer Anthony Thomas. The Sarnies had two debutants on show, with Luke Daley in goal and Rory De Costa at centre-back.
On a perfect pitch the home side took the lead when Luke Taylor’s shot took a horrible deflection to leave the new Egham keeper flatfooted. Mr Daley had his revenge twenty minutes later, a long and accurate drop kick upfield bouncing between the Sheerwater 6 and 18 yard lines, from where Thomas was waiting to drill a perfectly executed half volley beyond Craig Smith.
The second half was barely a minute old when Egham took the lead. Jay O’Connell slipped a perfect through ball to Thomas, who rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the end with the massive (empty) stand. O’Connell hit the left post with a thunderous shot after being played in by the impressive De Costa as the Sarnies dominated. Sheerwater were not able to breach an Egham defence looking considerably more organised than in those two preceding losses, and found, when they did create gaps, that Daley was in fine form in his first appearance. Thomas completed his hat-trick with a carbon copy of his second, Amin Belaid the provider this time round.
Egham face Cobham at home in the League on Saturday and go to Knaphill next Tuesday.
