The short trip to Godalming Town's Weycourt ground to face Badshot Lea brought a disappointing result tonight. Although they succeeded in one aspect, namely preventing last season's top marksman John Pomroy scoring against them, John Hamsher's men never dominated the home side, despite taking a 12th minute lead. Yet again it was Dale Marvell who found the net, this time from a wickedly inswinging corner that left everyone flatfooted. Both sides were playing crisp, accurate passes that was pleasing to the eye, so on balance it was no real surprise that after Paul Borg had pulled off a fabulous point blank save from Darren Blake in the 21st minute it was not long before the home side levelled, Keith Emerson prodding the ball in after a cross was not cleared.
The second half was not as rewarding as the second. Egham boss Hamsher took off Aarron Taylor-Ives and Matt Grave because both were, according to Colin Bartholomew, underperforming but it did not seem to help, with replacements Ross White and Brendan Matthews failing to make a mark on proceedings. In fact neither side found the passing rhythm of the first period and the game was heading towards a fair result of 1-1 until Egham conceded a free kick 25 yards out and Jason Short smahed it past Borg. A final minute drive into the roof of the net by Emerson added a cruel twist to a game that, Marvell and Short's goals apart, will not live long in the memory.
Egham Town dropped to 6th from 2nd and will have to improve if they are to win at Molesey in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round on Saturday.
